The Weight of Labels


From a young age, I faced a barrage of negative labels. People told me I wasn't good enough, that I was a burden, and even worse, I was labeled by those who were supposed to be my friends. The words of my mother, who once said there were seven levels of angels and I was closer to the bottom, echoed in my mind. These labels, often spoken without thought, created a war within my heart and mind, leading to a lifetime of struggle with self-identity.

The Impact of Family Dynamics


Family dynamics played a significant role in shaping my self-perception. My father’s comments about my resemblance to my mother added to the heaviness I felt. The constant repetition of negative beliefs about myself from those closest to me made it easier for them to shift blame and avoid accountability. This environment fostered a sense of confusion and self-doubt that I am still working to overcome.

Finding Strength in Motherhood


As I matured, I began to understand who I truly am. My children became my greatest teachers. They are not just my offspring; they are reflections of my personality and my journey. My son, who is currently serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, embodies the Divine masculine. His strength and goodness have been a source of pride and healing for me. Despite facing bullying and lies in school, he has shown resilience that inspires me.

My daughters have also played pivotal roles in my journey. My second daughter, born with joy and confidence, has taught me about the natural state of self-assurance that we are all born with. I realized that confidence can be eroded by life experiences, but it can also be nurtured and passed on to the next generation. 

The Lessons from Loss


I also experienced the pain of loss through the adoption of a daughter who was with us for seven years. Her presence illuminated the severity of the abuse I had endured and the narcissism that had affected our family. This experience deepened my understanding of the complexities of identity and the impact of trauma on children.

My adopted son, who comes from a background of abuse and neglect, struggles with his identity as he tries to find his place in our family. He grapples with the fear of being like his sister, who caused so much pain. Watching him navigate these challenges is heartbreaking, yet it reminds me of my own struggles to fit into a loving family environment.

The Burden of External Judgments


It is disheartening how quickly and easily labels are assigned to individuals, often with little thought to their impact. I encourage others to reflect on their experiences and recognize the signs of love and acceptance around them. Journaling has been a powerful tool for me, allowing me to revisit my past and uncover the truth about who I am, despite the labels that have been placed upon me.

One of the most significant lessons I have learned is about pride. Growing up, I was taught to fear pride, but I have come to understand that there is a distinction between healthy pride and the kind that leads to arrogance or self-deprecation.
